Description
The Targus Drifter II Laptop Backpack is designed to fit laptops with up to 17 ” screens. This backpack features two large compartments for storage including a padded laptop compartment that keeps the device secure and separate from other items carried in the case. The extremely thick padding on the back panel includes a large hidden zippered compartment and is strategically placed to provide lumbar support for your back. The heavily padded shoulder straps provide comfort for travel and include an elastic loop specifically designed to hold sunglasses. The main front compartment includes pockets for business cards, a mesh accessory pocket and key clip. A convenient soft, lined pocket is scratch-resistant to store fragile accessories such as glasses, and more. To keep files in order, the interior divider provides a safe place to store documents. Focusing on durability, the Drifter backpack features a weather-resistant bottom, thick industrial zipper pulls and a sturdy molded plastic handle supported by metal grommets and cabling. The Drifter Backpack offers a rugged case full of storage options and protective compartments for important devices.

The company I work for has purchased several of these bags. Every single one of them has failed at the strap seam where the elastic is sewn in to the strap. This failure started within 1-2 weeks of usage of the bag.
Sometimes good manufactures make bad manufacturing decissions resulting in a bad product. It's part of being human. What matters is how the manufacturee makes it right for the customer.
Targus does have a Limited lifetime warranty for their products but require the customer to pay the shipping cost to get the bag to Targus and back to the customer. This is fine under most circumstances but when you have a product as flawed as this, IMO, the manufacturer should offer to replace the bag with a bag that has a better strap design because repairing the product just to have it fail again is not going to make happy customers and be bad for brand loyalty.
I called Targus customer service to see if there was anything they could do to help us out since we had several of these bags and they all failed in the same way. Targus Customer service stated that our only option was to ship the bags to Targus and pay the shipping cost per bag. The end result would be the same bag with the same poor strap design that has failed in all the bags we have purchase within 2 weeks of putting in to use. It would take about 3 weeks for us to get the bags back.
No thank you.
I'll check around and see if the competitors have a better approach to dealing with their failures.

Yes the bag is great, except for the straps. As noted by several others on this site the seams popped on the strap within the first few weeks. Underneath the straps began to fray, and eventually separate from the strap. I had enough, after 7 months it was falling apart, and I bit the bullet and sent it back this week. Hopefully they will send a replacement that lasts. If not another return and another negative review.

The biggest flaw--to echo other reviews--is the durability of the straps. One reviewer commented that there is no need for the elastic in these straps. I disagree: they add to the comfort of the pack as you walk with a heavy load as they act to soften the bounce of the pack as you walk. However, the ends seem to unravel almost instantly if there is a heavy weight to the bag. I believe the engineering could have been a bit more solid in the construction of these bags. Stronger, or more elastic may be needed to ensure durability in future models.
Now, fix the straps, and you have an AWESOME bag. It is well compartmentalized giving me plenty of storage options. (I do find it odd that the bottom of the two main pouches connect. I didn't know this was the case until I lost something I put into one, and found it in the other. ) The padding on the back rides smooth on my back, and the shape and comfort of the straps are great for a smooth carry. There is room to carry a laptop in one pouch, and a 19" single-rack-unit device in the other.
